Gun Prepare Set

At our radiation department we have eight linacs in clinical use.

So it's good to have a clean and outgassed electron-gun standby.

That's why we built this Gun Prepare Set.

Gun_Prepare_Set

On this picture you can see  the Gun Prepare Set.

It exists of a stainless steel cross-piece tube, on which we mounted an ion getter pump,

a "Penning" vacuum gauge, a valve to evacuate the system with a separate turbopump assembly

and the electron-gun.

Gun Adaptor

Here you can see the adaptor to mount the gun to the cross-piece.

The adaptor has an angled viewport, through which you can inspect the gun-filament.

It's important to observe the gun-filament while it's glowing, to check if it keeps its shape when it gets hot.

NEVER look at the glowing filament with UNPROTECTED EYES, use for example a welding mask.

This photograph pictures the whole Gun Prepare Set trolley.

After having the filament glowing and baking out the whole vacuum system, the vacuum rate was about 3,5 e-8 mbar.

Vent the prepare set with dry nitrogen when you have to dismount the gun. Also vent the linac with dry nitrogen,

this ensures a quick recovery of the vacuum in the accelerator tube.
